Jamel Herring retained his WBO title last night by disqualification over Jonathan Oquendo as a result of a fifth round headbutt that was deemed intentional by referee Tony Weeks. The fight started out well for Herring and was highlighted by a third round knockdown of Oquendo from a left uppercut. As the fight wore on the fight got ugly with Oquendo often leaning in with his head as he recklessly came forward. Oquendo’s uncontrolled aggression cost him a point in the fifth round after a clash of heads was deemed intentional with the referee finding him at fault. Herring suffered a cut over his right eye from the head clash. The cut continued to get worse later in to the fight and he was no longer able to see because of the heavy flow of blood that was going in to his eye. The fight was stopped in the eighth round because Herring claimed that he could no longer see out of the injured eye and he was awarded the victory via disqualification.
