WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk squared off against IBF Light Heavyweight Champion Artur Beterbiev last Friday night in a very rare unification fight between two undefeated champions. The fight was very competitive with Gvozdyk seemingly getting off to a good start and out boxing Beterbiev from the outside by sticking and moving early on. But, as the fight wore on Beterbiev started to take control in the middle rounds by imposing his will and constant pressure on Gvozdyk. Eventually Gvozdyk wore down and after suffering three knockdowns in the tenth round the referee waved off the fight declaring Beterbiev the winner by TKO. Eric and Beeb recap this fight as well as the rest of the past week's boxing action.
Former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk issued a one side beating to Chazz Witherspoon last night in Chicago. Usyk who was fighting at heavyweight for the first time seemed content to systematically and methodically take Witherspoon apart with well placed shots all night seemingly never really looking for the stoppage. As a result of fatigue and an accumulation constant punishment from Usyk, who was able to out land him by a considerable margin, Witherspoon retired on his stool after the seventh round ended and was no longer able to continue. Eric and Beeb recap this fight as well as the rest of the past week's boxing action.
Gennady Golovkin edged out Sergiy Derevyanchenko last night at the Madison Square Garden in a tough war that saw both men go toe to toe on several occasions in the fight. It appeared that Derevyanchenko outworked Golovkin at close quarters for a great portion of the fight but Golovkin did have some success of his own from the outside in certain spots of the fight. Most felt Derevyanchenko did enough to pull off the victory but the three judges saw otherwise scoring the fight for Golovkin by the scores of 115-112 twice and 114-113. Golovkin picked up the vacant IBF middleweight title. Eric and Beeb recap this fight as well as the rest of the past week's boxing action.
